Messaging
Messaging in the sidebar holds settings that apply to every conversation in your workspace. Today that is one setting: Read receipts.
Read receipts
Read receipts decide whether members can see when other people read their messages. Pick one and click Save changes.
| Option | API value | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| On for everyone (default) | on | Everyone sees everyone's read state: a check mark once sent, a double check once someone has read it. |
| Off for everyone | off | Nobody sees anyone's read state. No check marks anywhere. |
| Let each user decide | user | Each user can switch their own read receipts off in your app. It works both ways, as in WhatsApp: someone who turns theirs off also stops seeing other people's. |
poolse enforces this on the server, so it holds for the poolse SDKs and for any client you build on the API:
- The member list leaves out the read state of members the viewer may not see.
- The
member:readrealtime event only reaches members who may see it. See Conversation channel.
Only other people's read state is hidden. A user's own read position still works whatever the setting: it drives their unread counts, their badge, and clearing notifications on their other devices.
Letting users decide
With Let each user decide, offer a switch in your app:
- In React,
useReadReceipts()returnscanChangeandsetShared(share). - Over the API,
PATCH /v1/mewith{ "read_receipts": false }(ortrue). In the other two modes this returns409 read_receipts_fixed.
See Read receipts & unread and Current user (/me).
Editing and read receipts
The page also says how long a message stays editable under each option.
This rule is applied by the poolse UI components (canEditOwnMessage in
@poolse/react), not by the API:
| Option | Edit button shown |
|---|---|
| On for everyone | Until someone reads the message. |
| Off for everyone | For 15 minutes after sending. |
| Let each user decide | Until someone reads it for users who share read receipts; 15 minutes for users who turned them off. |
The API lets the sender edit their own message at any time while it is not deleted. If you build your own UI, apply the same rule yourself if you want it.
